Average cost of home insurance in Illinois

The average cost of home insurance in Illinois is $1,720 per year, but according to our Policygenius Home Insurance Pricing Report, rates have gone up for many homeowners. Our report found that people who renewed their coverage in 2023 saw an average premium increase of 24% compared to the year before.

Rates in Illinois and other states prone to natural disasters will likely keep going up. More severe weather, like tornadoes, hurricanes, and wildfires, as well as higher rebuilding costs stemming from inflation, will make it even more expensive to get home insurance in the future.

Flood insurance in Illinois

A regular homeowners insurance policy doesn’t cover flood damage. If you live in a part of Illinois that’s at risk of flooding, it’s wise to consider purchasing flood insurance. Here’s what you should know:

  • About 118,485 homes in Illinois are at a high risk of flood damage.

  • The average cost of flood insurance in Illinois is $87 a month or $1,039 per year.

  • Coverage is most expensive in Millington ($2,197 per year) and cheapest in Cairo ($447 per year).

  • Most flood insurance policies are sold by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), but you can also get flood insurance from a private insurer.

When is tornado season in Illinois?

From 1997 to 2022, Illinois experienced an average of 64 tornadoes per year, the sixth-highest number of tornadoes of any state. Historically, tornadoes in Illinois happen during tornado season, which is from April to June. That said, according to the National Weather Service, nearly half of all tornadoes in recent years have taken place from September to February. [1]

With tornadoes being so common in Illinois, you’ll want to take precautions if you live in an area at high risk of tornadoes. Remember: It’s a myth that tornadoes can’t hit big cities like Chicago. [2] Plus, strong thunderstorms with gusts of wind can still heavily damage your home — so consider taking precautions regardless of where you live.

  • Consider guaranteed replacement cost coverage so that you can fully rebuild your home if it’s destroyed.

  • Remove debris from your property that a storm could pick up.

  • Install wind-resistant windows and shutters.

  • Upgrade your roof, especially if it’s very old.
